Foundation Passing - Guide
(Typically 7v7 / U8–U9)
Passing doesn’t just move the ball — it moves the game forward.
At the Foundation Stage, we help players master the basics so they can deliver the ball accurately and on time. Once the technique is in place, we build awareness and decision-making so every pass has a purpose.

Emerging
– Can they get the technique correct? (Execution)
The Technique:
Passing: Plant non-kicking foot beside ball, lock ankle, use inside of foot (big toe joint to heel), strike middle of the ball, follow through toward target.
Receiving: Angle body to face both the ball and your next pass target, watch the ball, cushion with inside of foot, take touch into space ahead.
Success Looks Like:
Short, accurate pass to target over 8–10m (dominant) or 5–8m (weak foot).
First touch takes ball into space and sets up pass.
Head steady, planted foot balanced, follow-through pointing at target under no/passive pressure.
Coaching Calls: “First touch into space!” … “Lock your ankle!” … “Follow through to your target!”
Developing
– Can they see their options? (Perception)
The Technique
Look up before the ball reaches you to see teammates, opponents, and space.
Look up again after your first touch to confirm your passing option.
Aim to spot two passing options (e.g., nearest teammate and one alternative).
Build Execution: Increase pass distance to 10–12m with either foot.
Success Looks Like:
Uses scanning to choose pass direction.
Controls and passes smoothly under light pressure.
Coaching Calls: “Look early, look again!” … “Two options!” … “Set it up, then pass!”
Proficient
– Can they choose the best option? (Decision)
The Technique:
Scan left and right before the ball arrives; scan again after first touch to confirm option.
Choose the most effective pass — to feet, into space, wide, or forward — based on movement of teammates and defenders.
Adjust body shape and pass type to execute quickly under pressure.
Build Execution: Maintain accuracy over 12–15m with both feet under active pressure.
Build Perception: Use one-touch combinations (wall pass, bounce pass) to beat an opponent.
Success Looks Like:
Multiple scans before and after receiving.
Pass made within 2 seconds of first touch.
Crisp, well-weighted pass that advances play or keeps possession under pressure.
Coaching Calls: “What’s on?” … “Play the best option!” … “Change it if it’s closed!”
